Double D Takes on the Bridge to Bridge
Having run a few marathons in my day, when I heard KNBR's talented Dan Dibley wanted to run a marathon back in 2006 I thought I would contact him and offer a little help in his quest. Two years later, as he has all his life, he is still setting goals, achieving them and going strong - and he will be one of the many thousands of runners in this month's Glide Floss Bridge to Bridge 12K/7K walk/run benefiting Special Olympics of Northern California. This Fall classic is not to be missed no matter what your pace and is annually voted by runners as one of the most beautiful road runs in America.
I have been an avid listener of KNBR for two decades; heck I even called into the nine to noon host Gary Radnich back in 2002 while I was running the Boston Marathon, so I've heard voices come and go on the Bay Area's number one sports radio station. But while listening to KNBR over the last three years I heard the competitor in Dan Dibley's voice perk up while describing his own athletic goals and workouts on air and I could tell that Dan was a good guy. As I've gotten to know him I'm glad to report I was correct. He, like most of us nowadays, is a professional juggler, keeping a semi-perfect balance of family, career and fitness; he has always had unconditional support no matter what the goal from his lovely bride Chanda and his two active sons Quest and Keon.
I recently asked him about his training, racing and latest running adventures.
"I love running, I love to compete, it helps me support my ‘goal muscle,'" he says. "Like any part of your body if you don't use your goal muscle, you will lose it. If I learn to set goals and accomplish those goals then I can claim a victory after the goal is checked off that seemingly never-ending To Do list.
"When I attain a goal in my athletic life it transcends into helping me attain goals with my career and family. I am a competitor, there is no sitting still - you are either progressing or digressing, and I'd rather progress."
Double D was, is, and always will be a competitor. It's just the way he's hardwired. When he started college at Cal State Northridge, he played a mean game of volleyball. In fact when Dan was practicing his legendary spike at the campus gymnasium, many locals thought they were having another earthquake. Nope, just Dan bringing it like only he can. He eventually graduated from San Francisco State with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Dan continues, "My Napa Marathon was dreamlike, a 3:57 without hitting the wall. My 50K was a blast, the Oakland hills are near my home in Oakland so it was like running in my backyard. The 50 miler is what I am most proud of, but it was also my most humbling moment on this planet. I was shattered, I hit the wall and then the wall fell on me.
"I am now training for the Bridge to Bridge run; this course layout has you running the streets of San Francisco with thousands of your friends, running past the icons of San Francisco such as the Bay Bridge, the Coit Tower, Alcatraz Island as well as the newly refurbished Crissy Field. The course is beautiful but demanding at both distances with awesome vistas in an urban setting. Lastly but most importantly all the proceeds go to the Bay Area Special Olympics, need I say more!"
Please come on out and run the KNBR Glide Floss Bridge to Bridge with Dan Dibley, and please say hello to him if you see him out there trudging along with the masses this October 5.
